Public consultation for new north of Glasgow school announced
Published: 27 October 2016
A report to consult on a proposed new non-denominational school for Maryhill, in the north of the city and surrounding primary school catchment areas, was agreed by councillors at Glasgow City Council's Executive Committee today (Thursday, 27 October).
The council announced plans a few months ago about the need to consult residents and the local communities over the future primary school provision in the area due to the resurgence, regeneration and rising school roll projections in the greater Maryhill area.
As part of a demographic study and options appraisal, carried out by council officers, a site at Kelvinside Avenue and former North Kelvinside Secondary School - has been identified as the most viable and suitable location.
The site meets the council's aspirations in relation to early years, primary and community facilities.
A number of pre-engagement sessions with the residents and ward elected members have already taken place ahead of the formal consultation process and the views used to shape the recommendations outlined in the report.
Bailie Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Children, Young People & Lifelong Learning, said: "It's crucial that we engage with everyone in the area so that we can plan for our children's future education needs.
"We are intent on public consultation in the area because we need to get this right for the medium and long term education of all our children.
"It's wonderful to be witnessing the resurgence and regeneration of Maryhill and as a result the need for additional primary school places.
"Our officers have undertaken a demographic study which has been included in the formal public consultation for everyone to have a look at.
"The recommendation in the report would meet both the educational and community needs of the local communities with plans for community sports facilities at the proposed new school, although we would also welcome other ideas.
"The public information meetings a couple of weeks ago were held to answer any queries that local residents and families might have ahead of the consultation.
"Now, I would urge everyone with a view on a new, non-denominational primary school to make sure they make their views known as part of the formal consultation."
