What is it?
A discount in Council Tax can apply where a person provides care or support to a person who is resident in the same property.
The person being cared for must:
- Require care for at least 35 hours a week
- Be in receipt of certain disablement related state benefits (listed on the application)
- Not be the carer's spouse/partner or a child under 18
Persons classed as carers are disregarded when determining the number of people resident in a property for Council Tax purposes. This means that where everyone in a property is either a carer or is disregarded for Council Tax purposes for another reason, a 50% discount may apply. Where all but one of the people in a property are carers or disregarded for Council Tax purposes, a 25% discount may apply. Where two or more people remain resident in a property who are not disregarded for Council Tax purposes, no Council Tax discount applies.
You need to apply for the discount as it will not be automatically granted.
When you apply, we need to gather information from the person who provides the care, as well as information about the person who receives the care and we also need confirmation that a relevant state benefit is in payment.
This discount will apply for as long as the relevant criteria are met.
We will periodically review all discounts to check that the award is still correct.
