Kerbside Collection Changes FAQ's

What if my green bin is full before the 3 weekly collections?

Recent research, which involved monitoring presentation and participation across all collection services, has shown most householders will have enough capacity in each of their bins if they are using them correctly and disposing of waste in the bins provided.

What if I have excess waste?

The lid of your bin must be closed. Please do not leave any bags on top or beside your green bin as they will not be collected. Make sure all recyclable items are placed in the correct bin, this will free up space in your green bin. If you have excess waste, it can be taken to any of our household waste recycling centres listed on our website.

I live in a flat, does 3 weekly bin collections affect me?

This collection cycle change does not apply to tenements or flatted properties, only to households who present their bins on the kerb for collection.

I have received my new calendar but on the website the dates haven't changed?

The new collection dates will change when the service starts.

My blue bin is full before my 2 weekly collection, what should I do?

Please flatten your cardboard boxes and plastic bottles, this will increase capacity and allow you to store more recycling in your bin.

What if my purple bin is full or too heavy to move?

The purple bin is smaller in size than the other bins and should be easier to move.  Research also shows that there is enough capacity within the bins for most households.

If you have excess recycling (blue bin material) or glass, it can be disposed at any of the household waste recycling centres, listed on our website.

In addition, there are currently over 650 public recycling sites across the city where materials can be deposited for recycling. A list of the public recycling sites are listed on our website.

I currently receive an assisted collection, will this change for me?

If you qualify for an assisted collection, the collection arrangements currently in place for this will not change.  However your collection frequency and collection day will change and this will be provided in your information pack.

Why has a sticker been placed on my green bin?

This is a promotional sticker as a reminder of what materials should not be placed in your green bin. Instead, these materials should be placed in your blue, brown or purple recycling bins.

Can I request additional bins for recycling?

Yes. Additional blue, brown and purple bins can be requested via our website, or via the MyGlasgow App.

How can I request a replacement food caddy?

Unfortunately, due to COVID 19 our offices are currently closed to the public. Once COVID 19 restrictions are eased and our offices reopen, we will update this page with information on how to request a replacement food caddy. In the meantime, food waste should be placed loosely into your brown bin or into a compostable liner which can be purchased from local shops and supermarkets.

How can I request a blue recycling bag?

Unfortunately, due to COVID 19 our offices are currently closed to the public. Once COVID 19 restrictions are eased and our offices reopen, we will update this page with information on how to request a blue recycling bag for life. In the meantime, please place all recyclable items loosely into your blue bin or alternatively use a supermarket 'bag for life' to store recyclable items before transferring them to them into your blue bin.

What if my new collection is more than 3 weeks away?

In the meantime, if your new collection day is greater than 3 weeks, please continue to present your bin on your current collection day until your new collection calendar begins, as illustrated in the examples below.

Why have you not moved the brown and/or blue bins to 3 weekly instead of changing the green?

We are prioritising brown and blue recycling bins to encourage recycling and capture more quality materials.

Why are brown bins collected every 2 weeks when there is less garden waste in the winter?

Food waste can also be placed (along with garden waste) in your brown bin. Brown bins will be collected every 2 weeks during the winter to help avoid odours and discourage pests.
