Submission Documents: by Bailie Hanzala Malik:- "Council notes with extreme concern the decision by the military regime of Burma to sentence Aung San Suu Kyi to a further 18 months of house arrest for an alleged violation of security laws. Council believes that this decision was a politically motivated one designed to prevent Aung San Suu Kyi from taking part in elections scheduled for next year and is a further example of the disregard for the democratic process shown by the Burmese regime since it prevented the National League for Democracy from taking power following its overwhelming election vicotry in 1990. Council recalls its unanimous decision in November 2007 to confer the Freedom of the City on Aung San Suu Kyi for her achievements in the service of democracy and its award to her in absentia in March of this year, stands with those members of the international community who have expressed their disgust at this abhorrent act and looks forward to the day when Aung San Suu Kyi is released from house arrest and able to take part in free and fair elections. Council also notes the correspondence between the Lord Provost and the Burmese Ambassador to the UK on this issue." Help Icon
