Robert joined the 4th Highland Light Infantry at Hamilton in September 1914. He trained in the south of England where he was promoted to Sergeant and about the end of 1915 was sent to Haddington. In 1916 he was attached as Company Quartermaster Sergeant to the British West India Regiment and went with this unit to Egypt. There he found that his only chance of seeing active service was to revert to private. This he did and was transferred back to the 4th Highland Light Infantry. Early in 1917 he arrived in France. Very shortly after arriving in France he was killed in action on 26 February 1917. He was 27 years old.
Robert was the youngest son of Colour-Sergeant James Edward, 26th Cameronians Sergeant-Major Instructor 6th Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. He was employed in the drawing office of Messrs Mechans Ltd., Scotstoun. While at Bellahouston Academy, he took a large share in the athletic life of the school. He played in the football team and was captain of the cricket eleven. He was an excellent cricketer and on leaving school he assisted Clydesdale for some time.
