William joined the 16th Highland Light Infantry on 14 September 1914 and was trained at Gailes, Prees, Wensleydale and Salisbury Plain and he proceeded to France with the Battalion in November 1915. Suffering very severely from trench foot he was invalided home to England in January 1916, where he spent eight months in hospital. After being at home for a short time he was again passed as fit for service in December 1916 and transferred to the 3rd Highland Light Infantry at Edinburgh and he was put on a draft for Mesopotamia, and left Edinburgh for the East on the 1 April 1917. A post-card was received from him, posted in Marseilles, France, on 13 April 1917, the day of sailing of the ill-fated Cameronia. Nothing was heard of him, beyond the official telegram reporting that he was missing and believed to be drowned. He was drowned as a result of the sinking of the Cameronia in the Mediterranean on 15 April 1917.
William was the son of Mr and Mrs Irvine who resided at 6 Abercromby Terrace, Ibrox, Glasgow. Before enlisting he was employed with the Scottish Wholesale Co-operative Society.
