Lord Provost hosts record breaking Burns Supper

The Lord Provost will host her record breaking Burns Supper at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel on Friday 22 January.

Last year's annual charity event smashed the million pound mark and was officially crowned the world's biggest Burns Supper by adjudicators from the Guinness Book of Records. The Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said: "This will be the 20th Lord Provost's Burns Supper. I'm extremely proud that it has raised more than £1 million over the years for charities.   "We've even more guests this year so I'm counting on them to continue the good work and dig deep to raise money for deserving causes." The Lord Provost's Charity Funds, the Lord Provost's Malawi Fund and charity Canine Partners will benefit. The First Citizen will be joined by broadcaster and CEO of Sir Tom Hunter's Kiltwalk charity, Paul Cooney who is the Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Brian Clements of McTears Auctioneers. They will be helping ensure the evening goes smoothly. Up for auction will be a bottle of the Lord Provost's reserve whisky signed by George Clooney and a WWE replica belt signed by WWE star John Cena.

Around 650 guests will attend the supper where they will be met by piper Lynn Calder, who performed at the opening of the Ryder Cup. It's the first time a female has piped in the top table at this event.

The supper is sponsored by Auchentoshan who will be promoting their latest expression American Oak distilled here in Glasgow.

Headlining this year's event is well loved actor Jonathan Watson, long associated with BBC Scotland's Comedy Unit, who will recite Tam O'Shanter.

He's starred in Naked Video, City Lights, Rab C. Nesbitt, Only an Excuse and Bob Servant. Film work includes Local Hero, Girl in the Picture, the Match, Solid Geometry, Filth, and the award winning horror film Let Us Prey.

The Toast to the Lassies will be given by Sheriff Lindsay Wood and the reply will come from advocate Edith Forrest.

Entertainment and Auciton

Additional entertainment will be provided by City Voice Choir and Musical Theatre students Kathryn Ronney and Imogen Walker who attend the Dance School of Scotland and will sing and recite poetry by the Bard.
