Who can register to vote

To register to vote, you must be aged 14 or over and be resident in Scotland (usually live). You must also be:

a UK or Irish citizen, or
a qualifying Commonwealth citizen living in the UK, or
a qualifying foreign national who is living in Scotland and has permission to enter or stay in the UK or who does not need such permission, including EU citizens.

Permission to enter or stay in the UK (also called Leave to Enter or Remain) refers to a legal immigration status.

What elections can I vote in?

UK, Irish and qualifying Commonwealth citizens can vote in UK Parliament, Scottish Parliament and local council elections.

Qualifying foreign nationals and EU citizens can vote in Scottish Parliament and local council elections.

You must be 18 and over to vote in UK Parliament elections.

You must be 16 and over to vote in Scottish Parliament and local council elections.

Register to vote anonymously

You may be able to register to vote anonymously if you are concerned about your name and address appearing on the electoral register because you think it could affect your safety, or the safety of someone in the same household as you.

You will need to:

· Explain why your safety (or the safety of someone in the same household as you) would be at risk if your name and address appeared on the electoral register

· Provide a court document or an attestation from an authorised person to support your application.

British citizens resident overseas

British citizens resident overseas can vote in UK Parliament elections. Information on how to register as an overseas elector is available at www.glasgow.gov.uk/overseas

You must be aged 18 or over to qualify to vote in UK Parliament elections.

Armed Forces, British Council Employees and Crown Servants

If you are a member of Armed Forces, British Council Employee, Crown Servant or their spouse or civil partner you are eligible to vote in all elections.

There are separate registration services for public servants posted overseas.
