Residents' ideas to help shape Liveable Neighbourhoods

Residents of four city neighbourhoods have identified projects that could maximise the social, economic and environmental benefits of where they live.

Following in-person and online engagement with the four Liveable Neighbourhood study areas earlier this year, a long list of emerging project opportunities has been developed that set out to make walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport the first choice for everyday journeys.

You can read the report for each area here:

When identifying potential projects, the key challenges in each neighbourhood were pinpointed, as was work already in development, and potential sources of funding.

How each intervention could contribute to key council priorities was also looked at, such as achieving net zero by 2030 and reducing child poverty. Liveable Neighbourhood development work also reflects a feminist town planning approach.

Included in the long list of ideas for these emerging Liveable Neighbourhoods are projects that can make it easier to access shops, local transport hubs and community facilities. Other ideas include making improvements to the local path network and the creation of 'green corridors'. Making streets safer around schools was also suggested, as was as improving the safety and accessibility of pedestrian crossings.

In this round of funding, a number of these long list projects will go on to be developed to concept design stage in the coming months, following further community engagement and co-design.

Liveable Neighbourhoods:

Through six tranches of work, Liveable Neighbourhood plans will cover every area of the city.

Following the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) process which sets out how a project should be considered at every stage, these plans will identify existing activity and propose new interventions that tie-in with the four Liveable Neighbourhood themes of Active Travel, Everyday Journeys, Local Town Centres and Streets for People.

Glasgow's Liveable Neighbourhood plans will be progressed alongside residents and neighbourhood groups to develop revitalised, accessible neighbourhoods - with integrated green infrastructure and enhanced public spaces.

The programme began in 2021, supported by Sustrans Places for Everyone funding. A number of projects from the first two tranches have since been taken further forward to concept and technical design.

The recent engagement work in Cardonald to Mosspark, Knightswood to Anniesland, Lambhill to Milton and Ruchazie to Easterhouse is part of Liveable Neighbourhoods, Tranche 3.

Development work in these four neighbourhoods will conclude next Spring with an update paper brought before our Environment and Liveable Neighbourhoods Committee to present the concept design proposals for each area.

Meantime, work is ongoing to expand collaboration across council services, explore new opportunities for the delivery of the Liveable Neighbourhood programme, and to identify new sources of funding that can take shortlisted community projects beyond the concept design stage.

A report on Tranche 3 progress was brought before our Emvironment and Liveable Neighbourhoods Committee on 8 October 2024.  You can read the full report by clicking on this link.
