Angela Celebrates G850

Angela with special commemoration mug

Home Care Area Operations Manager, Angela Currie is a proud Glaswegian. She was only six years old, fifty years ago when the city celebrated 'Glasgow 800'.

Angela recalls "Although I was young at the time, I remember being given a special commemoration mug in school and being taught about the Glasgow coat of arms. My sister and cousins got one too, and our granny gave them pride of place in her glass display cabinet to keep them good for us.

"I have fond memories of growing up in Glasgow; we lived in the Broomielaw and I spent my summers playing at Glasgow Green and splashing about in the paddling pool that used to be at Kelvingrove Park. At Christmas time, Lewis' department store was the place to go and visit Santa with its animated elf decorations, which were considered quite high tech at the time!

"Reflecting on the changes to the city over the past 50 years, there have been so many. One of the most visible is the volume of cars on the road now compared to back then, and the introduction of cycle lanes. Another noticeable change is to the city's developing skyline which includes new bridges and venues such as the Hydro. It's also great to see areas like Finnieston now thriving with fashionable bars and restaurants, giving the area a new lease of life.

"Glasgow is a great city to live and work in; people really do make Glasgow. Glaswegians have a great sense of humour and are honest, friendly people."
