Parkhead Cross Conservation Area is located at the heart of the Glasgow's east end. A number of fine historic buildings were built in the area during the prosperous Victorian and Edwardian periods but many have suffered from a lack of maintenance since the decline of the area's economic fortunes.
Despite this lack of investment, the area is still regarded as one of the most important civic and commercial centres in the City.
Summary
The Parkhead Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) was established by the Council in 2006. It invested more than £3.5million in a variety of projects aimed at halting the decline of the area and assisting with the repair of buildings that were in a critical condition.
As the first phase of the initiative neared completion the Council recognised that there was still significant work to be undertaken in the area. The Council launched the second phase of the THI in 2013.
The 5 year investment programme, funded in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland, will award grants of more than £4million to projects that improve the quality of the built environment and transform the area into a more attractive place to live, work and shop.
What projects have been delivered?
Phase 1 of the THI awarded funding to a variety of projects including repair works to the Parkhead Congregational Church and the Former Glasgow Savings Bank. The initiative also funded the reinstatement of 23 traditional shopfronts in an effort to improve the quality of the retail environment.
The second phase of the THI has funded the reinstatement of an additional 8 traditional shopfronts, re-surfacing of the footpaths around the Cross, installation of a new zinc roof on St Michael's RC Church and restoration of the category 'B' listed gate lodge at the Eastern Necropolis.
What projects will be delivered in the future?
The THI is focusing on the restoration of the Former Parkhead Public School on Westmuir Street, a category 'B' listed building that has been vacant for a significant time. The THI is working in partnership with Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and Parkhead Housing Association to undertake repairs to the historic fabric of the building and convert it for use as a local enterprise centre.
This project is being undertaken with additional funding of £1.8million secured through the Scottish Government's Regeneration Capital Grant Fund. The THI is also hoping to deliver repairs to 2 category 'B' listed buildings at the Cross - the Former Clydesdale Bank Building at the corner of Duke Street and Gallowgate and The 'Watson Tenement' on Westmuir Street. Delivery of works to these tenements will mean that the THI has funded repairs of the 4 listed buildings that form Parkhead Cross since it launched in 2006.
