The council has been recognised by the Scottish Transport Awards 2022 - with two of our sustainable transport projects scooping prestigious accolades at last night's award ceremony.
The first vital link of the £8m Connecting Woodside active travel project jointly won the Excellence in Walking, Public Realm & Cycling award, alongside delivery partner Cyclehoop Ltd for our innovative secure on-street cycle storage scheme.
Connecting Woodside
This popular active travel route on Garscube Road establishes a key connection for walkers, wheelers, and cyclists between the city centre and the Forth and Clyde canal paths. The project ultimately aims to create a network of segregated cycle ways and quiet ways that provide alternative routes to busy main streets between Possil Road in the North, to Charing Cross and Woodlands to the South, and Kelvinbridge in the west. The scheme will also link with the regeneration work at Port Dundas and Sighthill.
Secure On-Street Cycle Storage Scheme
It is anticipated that the introduction storage shelters on streets throughout Glasgow will make cycling a more attractive travel option that residents rely upon more routinely. We recognise that the lack of bicycle storage at home is a significant barrier to everyday cycling. This is a particular problem in flatted and tenement type properties. To overcome this barrier, we have introduced residential pay for use cycle storage facilities across Glasgow. These facilities are provided by Cyclehoop Rentals Ltd who supply, manage, and maintain the shelters.
Other Shortlistings
Also recognised by the awards body was our Cycle Activated Signage project, and our work with partners for collaborative use of location services data in transport planning - with both projects shortlisted in other categories.
Supported by the Scottish Government, Transport Scotland, Network Rail and The Railway Industry Association, the Scottish Transport Awards took place in Glasgow on 29th September 2022.
