Consultations begin on next phases of Avenues in Glasgow city centre

Published: 23 July 2019

Sauchiehall Avenue is the first of the Avenues to be created in Glasgow city centre through £115million of Glasgow City Region City Deal funding.  From Tuesday 23 July, two consultations on further Avenues in the city centre have begun.

The Avenues in Glasgow is the biggest active travel project in the UK.

The consultation on Avenue proposals for Renfrew StreetKillermont Street and North Hanover Street will begin on Tuesday 23 July (images of the proposals are attached).  There will be an on-street consultation on 23/24 July between 10am - 4pm, at Concert Square in front of bus station, Renfrew St at the Conservatoire, and George Square, with drawings of the proposals and a survey to participate in from 23 July.

The link to this survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/FQ8BZYQ.

There will also be a consultation on Avenue proposals for Elmbank Street and Holland Street, and a link to the survey on this part of the wider project, along with images and video flythroughs, can be found here: http://www.ironsidefarrar.com/avenues/avenues.html.

Stakeholders are also encouraged to attend a drop-in event will at the Novotel on 24 July to discuss these proposals in more detail. An image for the Elmbank Street Avenue and the proposed 'pocket park' in the Holland Street Avenue are also attached.

Both consultation surveys close on 18 August.  These surveys follow similar other exercises for other future Avenues, including Argyle Street, Trongate and Dixon Street (Summer 2018) and Sauchiehall Street precinct, Cambridge Street and New City Road (aka 'The Underline) last Autumn.

The Avenues project - an integrated network of continuous pedestrian and cycle routes - will transform the city centre's streetscape and public realm - making it more "people-friendly", more attractive, greener, more sustainable and more economically competitive.

More detail on the Avenues programme in Glasgow city centre, the biggest project of its kind in the UK, is available at: www.glasgow.gov.uk/avenues.

Design and construction work on the Avenues is being phased up to 2024. Construction work began with the Sauchiehall Street "pilot" project for the Avenues - Sauchiehall Avenue - in 2018.

The Avenues project is funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal.  Both the UK and Scottish Governments are providing the Glasgow City Region local authorities with £500million each in grant funding for the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
