The Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, officially launches today (Thursday 28 September 2023) to coincide with the International Day of Universal Access to Information.

It's purpose to make sure women can seek and find beneficial information from their governments that allow them, their families and their communities to  thrive.

Cities across the globe applied to be included.

The successful finalists were selected on their commitment to transparency and gender equality.

Glasgow's Lord Provost Councillor Jacqueline McLaren said: "We wanted to be part of the Carter Center's campaign because we know it  will have a positive impact on the everyday lives of women in our city. Glasgow is the first Scottish city to sign up. We know information enables women because it increases their awareness of economic opportunities, allows them to meaningfully participate in decision-making and helps them access public services. That doesn't just help women - it helps everyone."

The Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign goals are to raise awareness of women's right to information, increase the number of women accessing information about municipal and social services in participating cities and support local governments in reaching women with relevant  information.

The campaign will use traditional and social media marketing materials as well as  tailored information programmes for government agencies and citizen groups - specifically designed to help connect women to information. There will also be opportunities for the 35 affiliated cities to hold virtual exchanges. Allowing participants to share ideas and best practice.

Other cities joining the 2023 campaign are: Accra, Ghana; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Kathmandu, Nepal; Lagos, Nigeria; Mérida, Mexico; Quezon City, Philippines; Quito, Ecuador; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Rotterdam, Netherlands and Santiago, Chile.

The Carter Center was founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in 1982. A nongovernmental organization, the Center has helped to advance peace and health in more than 80 countries.
