James was the son of Mr and Mrs John R. Dick, Harvey Square, Lochwinnoch, Argyle, Glasgow.
He left school in 1904 and joined a firm of stockbrokers.
When war broke out in 1914 he at once enlisted in the 5th Cameron Highlanders (Glasgow Stock Exchange Company). With his regiment he went through the usual course of training at Aldershot and several other places in England. In May 1915, he crossed to France with the regiment and took part in fighting.
At Loos, France, on the 25th September 1915 he was killed. He was buried near the Hohenzollern Redoubt near Auchy-les-Mines, France.
