Samuel joined the 9th Highland Light Infantry in September 1915. He was killed in action at High Wood, France, on July 15th, 1916, while carrying a wounded comrade to safety.
Samuel was the son of Mr and Mrs Samuel Doig (Chief Engineer on the SS Fusilier), 3 Keir Street, Pollokshields, Glasgow. Private Doig, who was 20 years of age, was born in Oban. On leaving Bellahouston Academy he entered the British Linen Bank and was engaged in the St. George's Cross Branch.
