For many years Robert was an officer in the 5th Scottish Rifles, the old 1st Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. He won his spurs in the Boer War, commanding the 2nd Volunteer Service Company of the Scottish Rifles.
By his death Glasgow lost a citizen who, for his life's devotion to patriotic service, deserves to be held in grateful recollection. He awarded the Companion Order of St Michael and St George and Territorial Decoration. He is Mentioned in Despatches.
In 1911 he became Officer Commanding the 5th Scottish Rifles and went to France with them in 1914. On 3 July 1916 he was shot by a sniper. At the time of his death he was about 45 years old.Robert resided with his parents at "Ashlea", Bellahouston, Glasgow.
