James was the son of James and Helen Dunlop of Helen Villa, Bo'ness, West Lothian and brother of Archibald.

He was born and enlisted in Glasgow, gaining an MA and LLB from the University of Glasgow.

James was killed in Action aged 24 on 18th November 1916 and is buried in the New Munich Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel.
