After leaving Bellahouston Academy, Malcolm was employed in the office of William Graham & Co., Cathedral Street, Glasgow.
In August 1914, Malcolm, being a Territorial was called up, subsequently serving in Egypt and Gallipoli, Turkey. He was discharged owing to sickness and wounds received there but after a few months he rejoined and obtained his commission in the 9th Highland Light Infantry and was attached to the 17th Highland Light Infantry and sent to France. On 8 September 1917 he died of wounds received on the previous day. He was buried in France.
