Though under no necessity of volunteering for military service, James considered it his duty to enlist and in March 1915 at the age of 18, he joined the Hawke Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. In May of the same year he was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey. On the withdrawal of the troops from the Peninsula, his Battalion was transferred to France. He was killed trying to rescue his Battalion Sergeant-Major, who had been severely wounded on 24 March 1918. He was 21 years old.
James was one of two sons of Mr and Mrs Robert J C Fulton who resided at Glen Helen, Westerton, Drumchapel and late of 9 Kirkwood Street, Ibrox, Glasgow. Corporal James Fulton was in the War Office, Whitehall, London at the outbreak of the war.
Memorial: Corporal Fulton has no known grave but is commemorated at Arras Memorial, France; The Royal Navy War Memorial Roll; Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour 1914-1918 and the Scottish National War Memorial.
