John Anderson was born in Govan and was the son of Robert and Jeanie Anderson, of 45 Robert Street, Govan, Glasgow.

He was a private with the 1st/5th Battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) during the First World War. He was killed while serving with the Cameronians in Belgium and is buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery.
