Captain Gibson, born on 9th February 1891, was the elder son of Mr. James Gibson, till recently Headmaster of Woodside Higher Grade School, and nephew of Professor Gibson of the University. He was educated at the High School of Glasgow, and in his final year there was a prominent member of one of the most brilliant classes the High School has ever known, the members of which almost without exception, have attained distinction in literature, science, medicine, or the public services.

Three members of the class obtained successively the Snell Exhibition at Balliol College, Oxford, Lieutenant Gibson being the first of the three, after winning the highest honours at Glasgow University. He won prizes in Organic Chemistry and in Civil (or Roman) Law.

Taking a First Class at Balliol, he was awarded a Fellowship in his own college. A cadet at school, a member of the OTC at Glasgow University, he passed all his military examinations, and when he offered his services to the War Office in the present crisis, he was at once given a commission in the 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) and sent to the front. He was killed at Hill 60 on 5th May 1915.
