Thomas was born in Yorkhill, Glasgow. He studied bookkeeping upon leaving school before finding work as a meat salesman.

He was a professional footballer, most famously for Heart of Midlothian FC where he was the joint leading goalscorer in the 1914/15 season.

Gracie and ten of his team mates enlisted in Sir George McCrae's volunteer battalion, joining en masse on the 25th November 1914. The battalion was to become the 16th Royal Scots and was the first to earn the "footballer's battalion" sobriquet.

In March 1915 Thomas was diagnosed with leukemia and he died on the 23rd October in Stobhill Hospital in his hometown of Glasgow.
