John was one of the sons of Jack and Isabella Guthrie,Caird Drive, Glasgow.
He left Glasgow in May 1914 and entered the service of the Merchants Bank of Canada at Sedgwick, Canada.
In July 1915, he joined the 51st Battalion Canadian Infantry and arrived in England in May 1916. Shortly afterwards he was in France.
He was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium, on the 26th September 1916 in his 21st year.
