John was the third son of Mr Alexander Haggart, 230 Paisley Road West, Ibrox, Glasgow.

On leaving Bellahouston Academy in February 1911, he became an apprentice draughtsman with Messrs G. & A. Harvie, Woodville Street, Govan, Glasgow.

He enlisted in September 1916. He went to France on the last day of the same year.

He was reported missing on the Somme Front, France, on 23rd April 1917. Private Haggart was 21 years of age.
