Thomas was the youngest son of Mr Gilbert Haldane, an iron merchant from Glasgow and Mrs Haldane of 112 Camperdown Road, Scotstoun, Glasgow.
On leaving school Private Haldane went to the Technical College for a year and afterwards entered the office of Messrs Black & Stewart as an apprentice C.A. He had passed his Intermediate C.A. Exam and was studying for the final when war broke out.
In 1917 he was accepted for the Black Watch. After training at Ripon for three months he was sent to France in October, attached to the 8th Battalion. He was soon in the firing line but, as he was never very robust, the hard life of the trenches proved more than he could stand.
On 10th January he was carried out suffering from bronchitis and was taken to a hospital at Rouen, France, where it was found he was also suffering from trench foot. Unfortunately, bronchial pneumonia supervened and he died on 1st March 1918.
