William was the elder son of John H. Hamilton, solicitor and Mrs Hamilton, 17 Clifford Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.
Soon after leaving school in 1911 he joined the 7th Scottish Rifles (T.F.) when he was just 16 years of age.
Mobilised in August 1914, he spent the winter in Grangemouth and was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey, in April 1915 where he had a full share in the strenuous fighting on the Peninsula.
He was last heard of on the 28th June 1915 and a year after was presumed killed on that date. A few days before he went missing he had reached his 20th birthday.
