John was the youngest son of Mr J.H. Hutchinson, 38 Clarence Drive, Hyndland, Glasgow.
He was a medical student in his first year. Private Hutchinson was widely known as a splendid, all-round athlete. He was School Champion in 1915. While in training at Ripon and Richmond he won numerous prizes in regimental and Battalion sports. He was 21 years of age.
In November 1915 he enlisted in the 9th Highland Light Infantry. He went to France in July 1916.
He was killed on August 26th 1916 by the bursting of a shell during his first day in the trenches.
John is also commemorated on the Govan High School Roll of Honour.
