When taking part in the great offensive which began in the Ypres neighbourhood, Belgium, on 31 July 1917 he was struck by a shell whilst leading his men through the enemy's barrage fire. His company advanced and was actively engaged for 48 hours. No trace of his body could be found on the conclusion of the engagement.
Eldest son of Mr H Osbourne Bennie who resided at 10 Knowe Terrace, Pollokshields, Glasgow. Lieutenant Bennie's disposition was quiet and his demeanour modest but he was possessed of a sense of humour, strength of character and ability which would undoubtedly have opened him up for a career of marked distinction.
