In November 1914, Robert enlisted in the Scots Greys. Later he volunteered for service on the Tigris in the Indian Marine but his application was unsuccessful and he was transferred to the 9th Seaforths (Pioneer Battalion). In 1916 he obtained a commission in the 2nd Seaforths and while serving with this Battalion was wounded at Poelcapelle, Belgium, in October 1917. On his recovery he joined the 9th Seaforths. He was only two days up the line after being home on leave when he was killed at Kemmel Hill, Belgium, on April 13 1918 at the age of 25.
Robert was one of the sons of Captain and Mrs Jackson, Murrochsdale, South Avenue, Govan, Glasgow. Second Lieutenant Jackson served his apprenticeship as an engineer with Messrs McKie & Baxter and prior to the war went to sea in the Anglo-Persian Line. He was a member of Drumchapel Rugby Team, Thistle Swimming Club and Clyde Rowing Club and was one of the best swimmers of his time in Bellahouston Academy.
