William was the only son of Mr and Mrs E. Johnson, Helenslea, Elizabeth Drive, Cardonald, Glasgow.
He was attached to the Glasgow Yeomanry when war broke out and was mobilised on 4th August 1914. After training for a few months at Cupar Fife, his squadron was despatched to France on 11th May 1915 and with the exception of two visits home on leave he was there till his death. In the month of August 1917, the Yeomanry were dismounted and he was then attached to the Highland Light Infantry. In October they were holding the line in one of the hottest parts of the Ypres section, Belgium.
While coming down in charge of a party of men on the night of the 19th of October 1917 that he was hit by shrapnel. He was the only one of the party to be hit but his wounds were mortal and he survived only five minutes, never regaining consciousness.
