Robert was the son of Mr and Mrs William Johnston, 16 Harvie Street, Paisley Road West, Glasgow.

He left Bellahouston Academy in 1908. He was employed as a clerk with Messrs Donaldson Brothers, ship owners, Glasgow.

He enlisted in the 7th Camerons on 8th September 1914. After ten months training at Inverness, Aldershot and various other English stations, he went to France the beginning of July 1915.

After little more than two months of active service he was killed at Loos, France, on 25th September 1915.
