Hugh Kelly was born in Busby, Glasgow in about 1892, the son of Hugh and Elizabeth Kelly. In 1907 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.
During the First World War Kelly left his job at the bank's Glasgow Bothwell Street branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Corporal in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), on active service in France. He died on 20 July 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 26 years old.
