As a pupil in Bellahouston Academy he distinguished himself by gaining the Dux Medal. He then went to Glasgow High School and at the time he enlisted was engaged in a stockbroker's office.

He enlisted in the 17th Highland Light Infantry in October 1914 and after undergoing the usual training at home was sent to France where he took part in the great offensive on the Somme, France.

Kemp was reported missing on 1st July 1916 and on the 16th March 1917 was officially presumed killed.
