Thomas Kempton was born in Old Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire, in 1895, the son of Thomas Kempton, a spirit merchant, and his wife Helen. In June 1910, when he was about 15, he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland. He completed his apprenticeship at Glasgow Bridgeton branch. In November 1915 he was appointed accountant at the bank's Broomhill branch, but the appointment was cancelled because he went away on military service.

Private Thomas Kempton of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was killed in action in France on 24 April 1917. He was 22 years old.
