Crawford Ewing Laing was born on 28 October 1888, the son of Crawford Ewing Laing and his wife Cecilia Deans Rankin Laing. In May 1906, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Renfield Street branch. He became a clerk there in June 1909.

During the First World War Laing left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action by the bursting of a shell at Richebourg, France, on 17 May 1915. He was 26 years old.
