Alexander was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Alexander Liddell, Marshallbank, Pollokshields, Glasgow.

He was with his father in business, at the time he enlisted.

Joining the Scottish Horse in September 1915, he was in a very short time sent abroad and saw service in Egypt, Salonica and finally in France. From the day he enlisted till August 1918, he was never home. He was attached to the 13th Black Watch.

While in action with 13th Black Watch in France he was killed near Le Cateau, France, on the 4th November 1918 at the age of 22.
