Arthur was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs A.W. Long, 7 Hallewell Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England.
After leaving Bellahouston Academy he went to the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-on-Tyne and then removed to Birmingham on his father's being appointed one of the resident Admiralty overseers.
In 1914 he enlisted in the 15th Battalion Royal Warwickshire regiment with whom he remained till September 1915. He then obtained his commission and after going through a course of training with the Officer´s Training College at Gravesend, Shoreham and in Ireland, he was sent to France in June 1916. Here he was attached to the 1st Royal West Surrey Regiment and took part in some heavy fighting.
On 24th August 1916 an attack was being made on the enemy and while racing across the open at the head of his men he was killed instantaneously by a shell. His body was brought back and was buried with military honours near Albert, France. Second Lieutenant Long was only 20 years of age.
