Alexander Mercer Brittain was born in Glasgow in 1898, the son of Alexander Brittain, a bootmaker, and his wife Janet. In July 1912, when Brittain was 14 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Clydebank branch.
During the First World War Brittain joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in France on 14 November 1916. He was 18 years old.
