James Brown was born in Neilston, Renfrewshire in 1895, the son of James Brown, a commercial traveller, and his wife Agnes. In January 1911 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

During the First World War Brown left his job at the bank's Glasgow St Vincent Street branch to go on military service as a Private in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on 10 May 1915. He was 19 years old.
