William was one of the four brothers of Reverend John Brown, D.D., of Bellahouston Parish Church, Glasgow.

Captain William S. Brown, both at school and at University, was a notable athlete and won many prizes in the athletic field. After graduating M.A. at Glasgow, he studied law at Edinburgh University and when war broke out he was serving his apprenticeship as a Writer to the Signet.

In September 1914 he joined the Royal Scots and served about seven months as a Private. Receiving his commission he was gazetted to the North Staffords and went to the front in February 1916, as an Lieutenant. He received his Captaincy in 1917, on being seconded as instructor in the Second Army Central School.

He was killed in action on 14 October 1917.
