ohn Burt was born in 1899, the son of John Burt, a printer's compositor, and his wife Elizabeth. In January 1915, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Anderston branch.
In April 1917, a month after his 18th birthday, Burt joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was posted to France at the end of March 1918 and was killed there only a few days later, on 9 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
