Cairns, George Ritchie (1894 - 1916)

2nd Lieutenant George Ritchie Cairns, born on 16th July 1894, was the youngest son of Police Inspector James Cairns and Mrs. Cairns, Hillhead. After a full course at Hillhead High School, he entered Glasgow University, and graduated MA immediately before enlisting. He was the only member of his battery to be sent to Gallipoli, and was there only a few days when he was mortally wounded. He died on 4th January 1916.

A most enthusiastic rugby player, he won several prizes for running. He took a keen interest in the School games, frequently being seen at the Rugby matches, advising and encouraging the juniors. His was a singularly charming and attractive personality, and he will be mourned by all who knew him.
