John was part of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve landing offensive at Gallipoli. According to Forces War Records, he died of chest wounds. He is buried the Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Turkey.

John lived at 6 Linthouse Buildings, Govan before he joined up in the First World War. He had been an apprentice plater before enlisting. He was the son of Peter and Agnes Cairns of 67 Annetta Place, Darvel, Ayrshire.
