Robert was the only son of Mr and Mrs Cherry, 191 Copland Road, Ibrox, Glasgow.

A fine scholar and good athlete, Private Cherry was a general favourite throughout the school. Just before his enlistment he had been elected Captain of Bellahouston Academy School Football Team in which, for some seasons, he had been one of the outstanding players.

He left school in November 1915, to join the Glasgow Highlanders. After training at Ripon he got his desire and was sent to France in the autumn of 1916. He took part in the severe fighting round Beaumont Hamel, France, at the end of that year.

After two months, during which no news could be obtained by his parents, he was officially reported killed in action on 1st November 1916.
