John was the third son Mr James Chrystal and Mrs Chrystal, Briarbrae, 12 Woodrow Road, Pollokshields, Glasgow.

He went to Sydney in 1914 and joined the Australian Imperial Forces in September 1915.

He was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France, on 11th June 1916.
