Bernard was born in Govan, son of Bernard and Mary McAllister Connelly of Elderpark Street, Govan, Glasgow.

He enlisted in Glasgow in 1914 and died of wounds aged twenty one on 29th September 1915.

He is buried at Lapugnoy Cemetery near Bethune.
