In April 1915, William joined the Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry. After training at Rumgally Camp, Cupar and in Essex, he was sent to Ireland with his regiment. On his return to England he was transferred to the Dragoon Guards and later to the Royal Field Artillery. Proceeding to France, he was posted to the 298th Brigade, attached to the 2nd Australian Division. On the morning of 8 August 1918 he was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France, at the age of 20 years. He is interred in Adelaide Military Cemetery.
William was the younger son of Mr and Mrs A.B. Paterson who resided at 6 Edmiston Drive, Ibrox, Glasgow. He was serving his apprenticeship as a chartered accountant.
