Pirie, George Horne S/40497 (1896 - 1917)

George Horne Pirie was born in Blantyre, Lanark, in around 1896, the son of Superintendent George Horne Pirie of the Lanarkshire Constabulary and his wife Mary. In February 1910, when he was 14 years old, Pirie went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Motherwell branch. In April 1915 he moved to Glasgow chief office.

During the First World War Pirie left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Gordon Highlanders. He died in France on 9 September 1917 of wounds received in action. He was 21 years old.
