At the outbreak of the war in 1914, Thomas joined the Royal Field Artillery and had about four months training on Salisbury Plain. His training with the Boy Scouts was of service to him and he was picked as a signaller. In a short time he had a class in signalling and was promoted to bombardier. Early in 1915 he proceeded to France with the A/88th Brigade and shortly afterwards was promoted Corporal in charge of a signalling section.

In July 1916 in the Battle of the Somme (France) he won the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry, devotion to duty and helping the wounded under heavy shellfire.

He was also recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He was nearly 3½ years in France, with the exception of being gassed once, he had escaped injury till the morning of 6 June 1918 when he was killed. He was 21 years old.

Thomas was the son of Mr and Mrs John S. Ramsay, 22 Weir Street, Kingston, Glasgow. After leaving Bellahouston Academy he became an apprentice with Messrs David Rowan & Co., Marine Engineers Anderston.
